Kenneth Väkeväinen, Head of Product Management, Underground Networks, explains: “It is precisely thanks to the silicon material that a single product can cover a wide cable cross-section – simply because its elasticity makes it easier to install.”
He continues: “The stepless shearing screw and the silicone are an unbeatable combination. Silicon is an excellent insulation material due to its flexibility and thermal stability across a wide temperature range, so it performs superbly also in cold circumstances unlike other materials. The screw in turn doesn’t care about the conductor diameter or type (solid, stranded) and hardness or material (copper, aluminium) but cuts off at the correct spot every single time.”
100% Proof Tested – Beyond Latest Standards
Ensto’s separable connectors undergo comprehensive testing in the company’s ILAC-accredited laboratory in Porvoo, Finland (EN ISO/IEC 17025). Products are proof tested beyond the latest HD 629.1 S3 standard, ensuring 100% reliability even in the harshest conditions. The lab tests have included high-voltage and impulse tests, partial discharge measurements, heat cycle aging tests, short-circuit, and even climate, corrosion and VLF voltage tests.
“Investing in our testing capacity has been a long-term choice. Now, launching new products is remarkably faster as we can perform the tests in own facilities instead of using external operators. This improves our agility as a supplier,” Väkeväinen says.
Ensto truly has tested the new separable connectors beyond the standard’s requirements. Väkeväinen explains: “As we are launching a completely new product for higher voltage 42 kV, we have been obliged to test it – and all the other products in the range – according to the S3 revision of the HD 629.1 standard. It is very expensive, but we want to invest in this, and we wanted the product to be technically better than anything currently available. I think we succeeded.”

The cable lugs are produced in Porvoo, Finland, the silicone molding and assembly take place in Keila, Estonia, and the surge arrester cores are made in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, France.
