A utility company in Sweden, Sundsvall Elnät, is evaluating Ensto Maviko's smart compact secondary substation as part of its efforts to modernize and digitalize its electricity distribution network.
The cooperation began after representatives of the utility discovered the solution at Elfack exhibition in 2025. Following further discussions and technical evaluations, the company selected the substation for a pilot installation.
According to the customer, the project has progressed smoothly, with close cooperation between the utility's specialists and Ensto's experts throughout the process.
"We have been very pleased with the cooperation. Ensto has demonstrated strong expertise in communication-enabled substations and an understanding of how such solutions are deployed and integrated into modern distribution networks," says Erik Rönnqvist from Sundsvall Elnät.
The installed substation combines robust construction with advanced protection and communication capabilities. These features support utilities as they continue to increase network visibility, improve operational reliability, and prepare for future grid requirements.
Installation teams have also highlighted the practical design of the station, noting features that simplify installation work and contribute to a safe working environment.
The pilot project provides valuable experience for both organizations and supports the continued development of smart secondary substations for evolving electricity networks.
Supporting Smarter and Safer Grids
Many distribution system operators are gradually increasing the use of remotely monitored substations and digital grid solutions. Intelligent substations provide enhanced monitoring, faster fault detection, and improved operational efficiency, helping utilities build more resilient electricity networks for the future.
For Ensto, the Sundsvall project demonstrates the value of working closely with customers to develop solutions that address real operational needs and support the ongoing digital transformation of electricity distribution.
