Enstonet saves co2 in office electrification

Case study, February 2015

The case: office electrification for a 1600 m2 open plan office

The case study office is a 1600 m2 open plan office with 88 desks, 85 general luminaires and 22 service poles. The scope of electrification considered here is limited to the suspended ceiling and raised floor electrification; therefore delivering electricity between floors and the floor level main connection are not considered. The service poles and luminaires are only considered for their electrification, not for the products. This case compares the supply chain up to the factory. Delivery to installation site is excluded.

Two design solutions for the electrification were planned by an independent electrical designer; one with traditional installation and another based on EnstoNet pre-fabricated installation solution. The environmental impacts are from ISO 14040/14044 compliant LCA study by Bionova Ltd (www.bionova.fi).

The Results: EnstoNet delivers significant environmental benefits in installation

EnstoNet reduces the office electrification material inputs required per electrified work point by half

Traditional installation

3,04 kg

Approximately 50 % of the mass is copper and 50 % plastic

EnstoNet solution

1,29 kg

Over 60 % of the mass is copper and steel, rest are plastics

The solution saves 57 % of materials by mass. In traditional installation, long cables distribute electricity from panels. With EnstoNet solution, the electricity panels are distributed and cabling is much shorter.

EnstoNet reduces the office electrification carbon footprint per electrified work point by 30 %

Traditional installation

 3,48 kg CO2e

The emissions are linear with required materials.

EnstoNet solution

2,43 kg CO2e

The couplers and pre-processing contribute to emissions.

EnstoNet saves 30 % of the carbon footprint. This does not consider the benefits in delivery or in installation. Traditional cabling generates waste and requires more energy and manpower at the site, as well as taking time. With EnstoNet, the components are delivered to measure and can be quickly plugged into each other.
