Our journey in cutting down the CO2 emissions

At Ensto, we want to be part of promoting a cleaner and healthier environment. We are committed to improving resource efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our value chain. To increase our knowledge and understanding, we have carried out energy-related emission calculations for all our manufacturing sites and determined the carbon footprint of the first selected products. As a result from the study, Ensto’s first emission reduction targets set.

In 2021, Ensto made CO2 calculations for direct emissions (Scope 1) and indirect, purchased energy emissions (Scope 2) together with our partner Macon Oy. Based on the results were agreed on the first Ensto Group emission reduction targets, which are part of our strategic targets for 2021–2025.

Our strategic targets in emission reduction are:

  • 2022: 50% reduction of CO2 in Scope 2 emissions
  • 2025: 75% reduction of CO2 in Scope 1 & 2 emissions

Electricity plays a leading role in our own CO2 emissions. Therefore, energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy sources are the most impactful ways to reduce our own carbon footprint. To achieve the targets, our manufacturing sites are looking for ways to increase their energy efficiency. In 2022, Keila plant in Estonia started to purchase renewable electricity that cuts down our Scope 2 emissions remarkably.

This year we are working on collecting the data for Scope 3 (raw materials, transportation, waste, water, business travel, and commuting) emission calculations. We assume that raw materials make up the largest part of our Scope 3 emissions. CO2 emission calculations for four of our cold shrink products have been completed. We are participating in UN Global Compact's Climate Ambition Accelerator to help us accelerate our progress toward achieving net-zero emissions.
